Summary of Disposal of Municipal Waste

Municipal Waste
Municipal waste is all waste that is produced by physical persons and is further divided into paper and cardboard, glass, plastic, bulk waste and dangerous waste. Collection of municipal waste in the territory of Municipal District Prague 10 is ensured by the company AVE CZ-odpadové hospodářství s. r. o. that ensures all waste disposal as subcontractor of Pražské služby a. s. The company Pražské služby a. s. is the person charged with disposal of municipal waste in the territory of the Capital of Prague.

Mixed Waste
Understood by the term of mixed waste is residual waste that is left after sorting of municipal waste. We put that waste to garbage cans that belong to the flat object used by us.

The company AVE CZ s.r. o., on the basis of the statement of the payer of the fee (see Decree No. 2/2005 Coll., of the Capital of Prague by which the charge for municipal waste is provided) brings collection containers for mixed waste in house equipment of the individual objects. For the needs of bringing the container it is necessary to determine sufficient capacity of the containers. The owner of the object is obliged, according to § 6 let. a) of Decree No. 21/2005 Coll., of the Capital of Prague on wastes, to ensure sufficient capacity of collective containers for mixed waste. Understood by sufficient capacity of the container is such inside capacity of the collection container or sum of capacities of several containers that, with the determined frequency of waste removal and taking account of the number of persons using the object, will enable to put all mixed waste to the collection container that will originate during the operation of the households. The Decree on wastes provides, as the minimum sufficient capacity, the value of 28 litres per person and week (at housing estates it may be as many as 49 litres per person and week).

Separated (sorted) waste
Basic sorting of municipal waste is into paper, plastic and glass. The collection of containers of separated waste is set as follows: plastic – 3 x a week, paper – 2 x a week, glass – 1 x a month. At selected sites with high utilization of collection containers the frequency of removal of sorted components is increased.

At the majority of sites of sorted collection it is possible to put also drink cardboards (tetra-pack) to a separate container. The collection of tetra-packs is performed depending on the type of the container in the regime 1 or 2 x in 14 days.

The Section of the Environment strives for the sites of separated waste to be accessible for as high number of inhabitants as possible and to become a natural part of new housing complexes.

Large Capacity Waste
Bulky components of waste may be put to large capacity containers that are brought regularly at different places of our Municipal District. The attendance of those containers is again ensured by the company AVE CZ s. r. o. within the framework of the system of municipal waste disposal. The inhabitants have the possibility to put all bulky waste to the container, such as furniture, metal waste, wooden waste, electric waste, sanitary waste, etc. – with the exception of dangerous wastes (e.g., refrigerators, TV sets, chemicals, etc. and debris). In Prague 10 at present there are 78 sites where the container is located 1 to 4 x a year. Falling to one site there are three containers on the whole that will be replaced within the term of bringing as necessary.

Dangerous Wastes Collection Points
The inhabitants have the possibility to put their dangerous wastes – such as batteries, accumulators, unused drugs, thermometers, paints, glues, resins (including containers from such products), spray containers, oil and fat (with the exception of edible fats), fluorescent lamps, home and gardening chemicals, acids, hydroxides, solvents, photographic chemicals, etc., to stable collection points of dangerous waste. In the territory of Prague 10 there are three collection points of dangerous waste. One of them works also as collection yard.

Collection Yard
Collection yards are the places where the inhabitants may bring any waste that originates during the operation of their households. Putting waste there for the citizens of Prague is free of charge. A fee is paid for tyres only – CZK 25 for a piece. Limited is also the putting of debris there – only up to the quantity of 1m3 per person and month. In Prague 10 there is a collection yard in the Street Teplárenská 5, in Malešice. Accessible for the inhabitants of Prague 10 is also the collection yard in the Street Zakrytá, in Spořilov. It is possible to bring non-functional refrigerators and TV sets to collection yards.

Composting Plant
The first public composting plant in the territory of the Capital of Prague is in Malešice, in Dřevčická Street, next to the collection yard. The operation of the composting plant is ensured by the company Jena – firm of services. It is possible to bring biological wastes to the composting plant, first of all, from own gardens and also from the households. They are, e.g. branches, grass, leaves, soil, bark, kitchen waste, etc.

The other possibilities of Waste Disposal:

  • Portable batteries and accumulators may be put away, apart from collection points, to special containers that are located in the building of Municipal Authority and at basic and secondary schools.
  • Thermometers and drugs may be brought to pharmacies that collect them free of charge. At selected pharmacies it is also possible to get a special container for syringes from diabetics and hand them in there.
  • Mobile collection of dangerous wastes is accomplished in regular terms at several sites (in Prague 10 three lines on the whole) by an especially adapted vehicle. During mobile collection all dangerous wastes, with the exception of refrigerators and TV sets, are taken from the inhabitants.
  • Containers for textile (they are not a part of the system of municipal waste disposal) enable putting away of unneeded or old clothing, shoes and other textiles that would otherwise be put to the garbage containers with mixed waste. In Prague 10 two special containers are located for this purpose that are operated by the company Texat s. r. o. at its own costs. Unneeded clothing may also be handed over to charity organizations that deal with their collection (e.g., Diakonie Broumov, the Red Cross).
